As we soar into 2025, the realm of content creation is more exciting than ever!

With new trends, diverse platforms, and evolving technologies, content creators in Malaysia are in for a treat.

Whether you’re a budding influencer, a seasoned vlogger, or a professional photographer, having the right gear is essential to elevate your content.

We've compiled a list of gear that you might find helpful if you want to take on content creation in 2025, but do not fret! This list is meant to be a guide and not a must-have list. Take these recommendations with a grain of salt and make your own purchases based on what you need. And remember there are always ways to create content on a budget. More on that at the end. Let’s dive in!

1. High-Quality Camera (Mirrorless or DSLR)

A stunning camera is the backbone of any content creator's toolkit.

For 2025, consider the Sony A7 IV. This full-frame mirrorless camera offers exceptional image quality, impressive autofocus, and 4K video capabilities, making it perfect for both photography and videography.

Additionally, the Canon EOS R6 is another excellent option for its fast performance and great low-light capabilities.

2. Smartphone with Advanced Camera Features

For those who prefer portability, the Apple iPhone 15 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra are top choices. Both smartphones boast advanced camera technology, including high megapixel counts, stunning low-light performance, and versatile features like 8K video recording. They are perfect for capturing and sharing content effortlessly while on the go. The Apple iPhone 15 and 16 Pro models also have a feature where you can record in Apple Log. While it is a bigger file, it does capture way more colour information and you can have more control when colour grading. Don't need a top tier phone like the ones we've mentioned? Don't worry! Any smartphone has a decent camera nowdays. Do not let good be the enemy of perfect and use whatever you have on hand.

3. Gimbal Stabilizer

If you vlog a lot and own a camera, consider the DJI Ronin-S for DSLR and mirrorless cameras, or the Hohem iSteady X2 for smartphones.

Both gimbals come with stabilization features that eliminate shaky footage, making your videos look polished and cinematic.

4. Quality Microphone

Great audio quality can significantly enhance your content. The Rode VideoMic Go II is a compact shotgun microphone that delivers clear, directional sound, making it ideal for vlogging. If you prefer something discreet, the Rode SmartLav+ is a lapel microphone that connects directly to your smartphone for easy recording with excellent audio fidelity.

5. Lighting Equipment

Lighting for content is extremely important.

Lighting can drastically change the quality of your content. The Neewer 660 LED Video Light Kit is a popular choice that you can get for about RM500 on Shopee, providing adjustable brightness and color temperature.

For portability, the Ring Light by Neewer is perfect for beauty and lifestyle content, offering even lighting that enhances your visual appeal. Even this one we found from IKEA might be a good option for some of you.

6. Tripod and Camera Accessories

A sturdy tripod is essential for steady shots. The Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Tripod is lightweight and adjustable, making it perfect for travel.

If you have a bit more to spend, pair it with (practical) accessories like the B+W UV Filter to protect your lens and improve your images under varying lighting conditions.

7. Editing Software and Apps

Editing your videos and images is essential for professional results. For more advanced editing, Adobe Premiere Pro for videos and Adobe Lightroom for photos are industry standards. For easier, mobile-friendly options, check out CapCut or InShot, both of which offer intuitive interfaces and impressive features for on-the-go editing.

If you're not a fan of Adobe's monthly subscription model, check out Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. Davinci Resolve Studio is well-known for its industry leading colour grading features and Final Cut Pro is works incredibly well and is really energy efficient when you use it on IOS. You can get both of these respectively for around RM1300 but if Davinci Resolve has a free version that has enough features for standard videos, with limited features that you get in the paid studio version.

8. External storage and or cloud storage

To manage your growing collection of content, a reliable external hard drive like the Western Digital My Passport (available in various storage capacities) is essential. Additionally, consider cloud storage solutions like Google Drive or Dropbox for easy access and backup of your files anywhere.

One thing to note: Hard drives and SSDs (Solid State Drives) are two different things.

We typically use SSDs for editing and hard drives for completed work and long term storage. SSDs are generally more expensive, but a lot faster than hard drives. There's a lot more detail that we can get into these but we'll save this topic for another day.

This is the SSD and HDD that we use at The Creative Pistachio.

9. Green Screen

A green screen can add a creative flair to your videos. The Elgato Green Screen is portable and easy to set up, making it a favorite among content creators. This setup allows you to transport your audience anywhere while elevating your content quality. It is also brilliant for fun effects you can play with in video editing.

Technically, any green cloth will work if you are on a budget. Just as long as you light your green screen evenly and your subject well with minimal shadows on the green screen, you should be good to go!

10. Social Media Management Tools

To effectively manage your online presence, investing in tools is crucial.

Hootsuite and Buffer can help you schedule posts, analyze performance, and engage with your audience across different platforms. These tools streamline your content strategy, giving you more time to create.

Solid list! As a Malaysian creator, I’d add that having reliable editing software is a game-changer, especially when you're juggling content across platforms. I’ve been using https://www.movavi.com/support/how-to/how-to-capture-video.html lately—it’s lightweight, beginner-friendly, and handles most of what I need without the steep learning curve. Definitely worth checking out if you want smooth edits without getting overwhelmed.
